Jim Rehlin was pleased to have been invited in 2018 to join the Chelsea Painters, a diverse group of talented men and women who are actively involved in art on local, regional, and national levels. Membership is by invitation and limited to 25 active members.

Activities include weekly meetings to share information through critiques, lectures, and demonstrations, plus opportunities to display work in group exhibitions. An annual highlight is the renowned Chelsea Painters June Art Fair, which attracts art patrons throughout Michigan and several other states.

INSPIRATIONS FOR SEVERAL OF JIM’S PAINTINGS

Picture
Panic Grass
Every spring, we plant colorful annuals in several outdoor pots. But in spring 2020, due mainly to the coronavirus lock-down, our patio pots sat empty. Yet somehow, panic grass planted itself in the leftover soil in one of those otherwise empty pots, and then grew into a beautiful, thriving plant.

All things considered, this self-seeded and healthy PANIC grass seemed completely appropriate in 2020, and it became the inspiration for Jim
’s Panic Grass painting. Look closely, and you’ll see a tiny vole who also appreciated this beautiful plant.

Panic Grass is a 36" x 18" framed acrylic-on-canvas painting. Please use the email icon at the top of this page if you
’re interested in purchasing this painting or have questions about any of Jim's artwork.

A Mountain Road
On a road trip, a red-tailed hawk kept us company for many miles – flying overhead, disappearing, then reappearing – serving as our guide on a winding mountain road.

This beautiful creature inspired Jim to paint A Mountain Road, which includes the sunset sky that was the backdrop for the graceful and beautiful flying hawk.

Although this painting is no longer available — and thank you to the art patron who purchased it — if you have questions regarding
any of Jim's paintings, please send an email via the icon at the top of this page.

Full Moon & Raccoon
J
im’s Full Moon & Raccoon depicts a closeup view of pine trees in our yard along with one of the critters who occasionally visit us. On a moonlit night, Jim saw the raccoon climbing along a pine branch, and he knew what his next painting would be. If you look closely, you’ll see the late-night critter among the pine needles and cones, made easier to see with the bright light of the full moon.

Sunflowers & Chipmunk Garden
O
ver the years, Jim has been inspired to paint a variety of sunflower paintings, including this 20" x 16" framed, acrylic-on-canvas Sunflowers &Chipmunk Garden.

This particular painting is a tribute to several chipmunks who were responsible for planting the garden beside our backyard fence. They scavenged sunflower seeds that fell from our bird feeders and, although not intentionally,
occasionally dropped a few as they ran back home. Mother Nature took over and we soon had this lovely little garden. In this painting is one of those chipmunks, with cheeks stuffed full of sunflower seeds, and a buzzing bee that's helping to pollinate the flowers.

The Village Gobblers
O
nce again, Mother Nature provided amazing inspiration for Jim, this time in the form of seven, wild, North American turkeys who flew over the fence and into our back yard one afternoon (yes, wild turkeys fly occasionally).

Jim selected three from the flock for this energy-style painting:  a female who wore a rare shade of white, plus a juvenile and adult male who both wore the more typical black, bluish brown hue, with the tom proudly displaying his tail fan feathers.

Parrot Pandemonium
J
im was inspired to create his Parrot Pandemonium, as well as several other parrot paintings, after painting one on commission for a woman who loves scarlet macaws. (Visit here for details on Jim’s commissioned work.) Jim has enjoyed painting all kinds of birds, but he found these brightly colored parrots to be especially suitable for his energy style of artwork.

If you have questions about any of Jim’s parrot paintings, please send us an email.

Full Moon Rising
J
im created this painting in celebration of all the unexpected pleasures that life holds. In this case, a wrong turn taken on a road trip provided a surprising but interesting visual experience that Jim and his wife otherwise wouldn't have had.

Twin Pines / Lake Martha Sunset
This painting was inspired by Jim’s mother, Martha Rehlin. She was convinced — the first time she visited us at our current home — that she saw a lake just beyond the pine trees in our back yard. There isn’t one there, but the idea was intriguing and Jim thought, why not create a painting as a tribute to Martha’s great imagination?

The result is Twin Pines / Lake Martha Sunset, which depicts a view of the setting sun behind two stately red pine trees, on the idyllic shores of Lake Martha.

Jim’s original Twin Pines / Lake Martha Sunset, 20" x 20" framed acrylic-on-canvas, was purchased at the Ann Arbor Art Center during their 2020 Holiday Art Shop Exhibit. Thank you to the art patron(s) for supporting the fine arts with this purchase.
